Jackie's Journal
It's only been 3 days and I am overwhelmed by the culture here. For the first time yesterday, we were able to visit a community and play with the kids in a field. They were ecstatic about chasing bubbles that we were blowing, but even more so about having us take their pictures and then showing them to them. When it was time for us to head across the street to our concert in a tent, I was amazed that the 100+ children that we were playing with had disappeared as quickly as they had arrived. At the concert, I was holding a little boy of about 3 years old. I kept looking around to see if his family was looking for him, but no one seemed to mind that I was holding him in my arms, dancing and singing. We never spoke a word; I wasn't sure if he even knew how to talk or if he understood English or African. A while later,a young boy came up and started having a conversation with him in African. I asked the young boy if it was time for my new friend to get going. He responded that the boy's mother was calling for him. I was very curious to see who he belonged to, so I watched them as they made their way through the crowd and out of the tent. He hadn't come to the concert with his mother. She was at home.
